The creation of the Caribbean and the birth of the various island chains that comprise the Caribbean. In order to better understand and appreciate our Caribbean itinerary let’s briefly examine the geological, and tectonic forces that have led to the creation of the complex Caribbean island chains that surround the Caribbean Sea. We will also explore a brief history of the inhabitants of the Caribbean from early migration to colonial times.
The exploration and exploitation of the Caribbean from sweet success of the sugar revolution to current economic necessity. The Caribbean gold rush, a sweet story, with dark consequences. Let’s explore the powerful trade syndicates and European powers that created centuries of slavery, the science that eventually was the demise of the sugar boom, and what is its replacement.
The sands of time that have crafted some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Let’s explore the science behind the creation of the wonderful Caribbean beaches. What is sand, why are some sands finer than others, why are some beaches black and others white, and some even pink or green? We will also examine the formation of coral and what the effect of sea level changes have been on the Caribbean in the past, and what may be expected in the future.
The forces of nature, both current and historical, that impact life in the Caribbean. The Caribbean region has a long history of natural disasters associated with it, such hazards as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides and droughts. Let’s examine the science behind such events and what may be expected in the future.
